The Curse of Steampunksper

Don’t know what steampunk is? Wikipedia entry on Steampunk.

So, it was a month or so ago that this incarnation of Jasper burst into my brain, took hold, and refused to let go. I mean, come on, Jasper as a Victorian era tinkerer weirdo eccentric dude? Hot!

So, I started brainstorming, and that was fun for a few days, until I admitted the fact that while I love the idea of steampunk, the aesthetic, the Victorian setting, the inherent cheese factor of it all… I knew pretty much nothing about the literary genre.

And so I gave up on that idea.

But, of course, my head was still firmly stuck in the Victorian era, and so Steampunksper became Paintsper. My as yet unnamed Victorian era E/J fic is currently over half written. But… it’s on hold because a couple days ago Steampunksper reared his ugly head again.

So, (and yes, I’ve just realised I start an awful lot of sentences with ‘So,’ but I don’t care, this is my blog :p ) I started doing actual research. Looking for steampunk fic to read, trawling google images for inspiration for gadgets and stuff I could use in my fic that would make it actual steampunk rather than just Victorian cheese… Hoping also to find some m/m steampunk erotica, cos, well, I’m a perv. Didn’t find any **pout**

That’s what found me at the site of an erotica publisher, at a call for submissions for a m/m steampunk erotica anthology. And I went… huh.

Okay, so I know a lot of fanfic writers have no interest in being paid for their writing, but I can’t say it’s not an intriguing concept. You know?

I’m officially working towards my first ever rejection ;) I figure it’ll be like a rite of passage thing, yeah?

So, (there it is again **neener**) Steampunksper has bitten the dust once again while I work on an original steampunk m/m erotic short story.

And I am still steampunk challenged. Trying to rectify that with a crash course in steampunk literature, including all the porn I can find (and yes, that means het, cos the closest to m/m I’ve been able to find was a MFM threesome that didn’t even have any buttsecks! Gah!).

Wish me luck. I’ll fucking need it!

What did they use to… you know?

I’ve been researching for my Victorian E/J fic.

Guess what they’re gonna use that for ;)

I’m afraid.

So… Say Something Else is out there, or at least chapter 1 is, and the reports are coming in of eyes welling and tears already. That was a little unexpected. Actually the fact that reports (or reviews, anyway) are coming in at all is still a little surreal.

But yeah, dancing around all happy and shit. And maybe that good mood will help me get my house cleaned up.

So now SSE is underway (chapters will be coming hard and fast after easter, all going well, at least that’s my intention) now I really should get back to rewriting Vital Depth. If I can put my new Victorian on hold. Dunno if I can. Kinda obsessed with it.

Vital Depth. Yes. I have three months to get it to a printable state, including cover art. But I figure, if I can write 30k in a couple of weeks, I should be able to rewrite, I dunno, 90? in half that time? Hopefully less, if I get my shit together. Fuck. I don’t think that it’s that huge a story, and yet in its original incarnation it’s over 100k. So yeah, lose some wordcount would be good for a start.

And then, edit the fuck out of it, send to pre-readers, dunno if I’ll get time to have it properly beta’d, or even if my beta would be up for tackling it as a rush job…

I’m afraid. I’m very afraid.

Oops, I fell over and accidentally started a new fic.

Which I’m not supposed to be doing, cos I’m sposed to be rewriting my nano novel, but hey, I fell on the laptop, so what can ya do? So yeah, started Saturday, that would be the, uh, 27th of March. And yeah, have almost 11k words in 4 chapters already. That’s some wordcount, but it’s flowing really well. Have to admit, I’ve done some serious brainstorming over the last week or two on it, and got about 4 or 5 chapters down on paper, mostly smut, which is about all I might be able to use for this final incarnation of the fic. Characterisations are too different in the first false start.

I false start a lot when I write, but it helps to get my characters and the plot clear in my mind.

Anyway, this is my attempt at historical fiction. Victorian era, which I love, but I’m not so well versed in American Victorian, most of what I read is English Victorian, but oh well, we’ll see how I go. And oh yeah, E/J. And an exercise in how many times can I write buttsecks without saying fuck or cock or ass LOL
